During the Regular Meeting in August, the Glynn County Board of Education unanimously approved the proposal of a half-mill decrease in the millage rate for the coming fiscal year. The board will hold three public hearings prior to adopting the new rate of 14.9 mills.
Two hearings are scheduled for Aug. 22 and a third on Aug. 29, after which the board will vote on adoption of the new rate. If approved, this will be the lowest millage rate in the last 25 years and will be the third year in a row that it has decreased.
In addition to the proposed millage rate, the board also approved Policy JG (1): Video Surveillance, which was presented in July and tabled for 30 days. The policy states that surveillance cameras will be used for safety, security, and discipline in all Glynn County public schools, but not in restrooms, locker rooms, showers, or private offices.
You can find the full policy details here.
Other items approved during the meeting were:
- Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Coastal Plains High School.
- This agreement allows students from Glynn County who have dropped out, are at risk of dropping out, or need credit recovery to attend Coastal Plains, a non-traditional school setting, to earn their high school diploma.
- Agreement with Glynn Brunswick 911.
- This agreement allows the Board to utilize Fire/EMS dispatch, the emergency 911 communications center, and up to 30 radio units from the Joint Public Safety Communications Department (JPSCD) for an annual cost of $90,000.
- Renewal of a one-year contract with Sunbelt Staffing for special education services.
- Renewal of a second-year subscription for 15,000 Google Workspace for Education Plus licenses to serve as the district’s Learning Management System (LMS).
